Travel Story by Helga McGilp

  A postcard to Barcelona
Barcelona, Spain

La Sagrada Familia

Best places to visit in Barcelona:

1. Parc Guell Ė a beautiful Art Nouveau park in north-west Barcelona. Best to visit 1st thing in the morning. Expect to spend at least 2 to 3 hours here.

2. La Sagrada Familia Ė Gaudiís unfinished church. Good views from the top if there are few tourists.

3. Casa Mila (La Pedrera) Ė best to visit in late afternoon to take good photos from the rooftop.

4. Casa Batlio (near Casa Mila)

You can easily combine sightseeing and shopping before/after Casa Mila and Casa Batlio, as the best shops are on Passeig de Gracia (north from Place de Catalunya). There are some nice pavement bars to chill out. Divide your one-third of time with Gaudi, one-third eating/drinking and one-third walking. Many shops and restaurants are closed on Sundays, making Sundays a good day for visiting Parc Guell.

La Ramblas is a good place to base yourself but itís a bit overrated. The best restaurants (for serious meals) are in Barri Gotic (the old Gothic quarter) especially in evenings with narrow alleyways. Good restaurants and bars are not particularly easy to find. We found some good ones, which were out of sight.

I enjoyed walking around the old harbour area (Barceloneta) Some nice but slightly expensive restaurants and bars. Itís a good place to chill out if the weather is good.

Thereís obviously the Nou Camp. Iím not sure if the museum is worth visiting if you are taking a short break. You can always visit another time when Barcelona are playing at home.

Enjoy Barcelona!
