Travel Story by Helga McGilp

Tossing out the water to welcome the New Year!
Havana, Cuba

There is nothing like celebrating New Yearís Eve with Deaf Cubans in Havana.

Shortly after midnight, they have a tradition of taking a bucket of water to the balcony and throwing it out on to the street. They explained that the water removes all the troubles over the last year so they can start afresh in the New Year. They laughed when we asked whether Cubans would be annoyed if they were caught out on the street. Itís an annual sport for the children who get caught in the showers.
